Keeping Dutch Nationality

 

Dutch nationals who do not have any other nationality will keep their Dutch nationality, even if their passport expires.

However, are you a Dutch national with dual nationality? Then you will need to apply for new proof of nationality within 10 years from the date of issue of your Dutch passport in order to keep your Dutch nationality.

It is important to renew your passport in time. The Embassy advises you to make an appointment for a new passport one year before your current passport expires. This is advisable because many countries require passports to be valid for a minimum of six months during travel.

Biometrics (electronic fingerprints) are required for all Dutch passports. Therefore you have to apply in person for a new passport at the Embassy in Wellington or at the Consulates in Auckland or Christchurch. However after 1 October 2015 you will only be able to renew your passport at the Embassy in Wellington. The Consulates in Auckland and Christchurch will no longer provide this service after that date.

If you are unable to apply in person at the Embassy or Consulate within the 10-years from the date of issue of your current passport, there is the option to apply for a “Declaration of Dutch Nationality”. This declaration extends the Dutch nationality for a period of 10 years for those with dual citizenship. Beware, this declaration is not a travel document.

Nederlanders die geen andere nationaliteit hebben, kunnen de Nederlandse nationaliteit niet verliezen, zelfs niet als hun paspoort verlopen is. 

Bent u een Nederlander en heeft u daarnaast een andere  nationaliteit? Dan dient u binnen tien jaar na afgifte van uw paspoort een nieuw bewijs van Nationaliteit aan te vragen om uw Nederlanderschap te behouden. Dit kan door middel van het aanvragen van een nieuw paspoort of een Verklaring van Nederlandse nationaliteit.

Het is belangrijk uw paspoort tijdig te vernieuwen. De ambassade raadt aan een jaar voor het verlopen van uw paspoort een afspraak te maken voor de aanvraag  van een nieuw paspoort. Dit ook omdat veel landen een paspoort met een minimale geldigheid van 6 maanden eisen bij doorreis.

Sinds 2009 worden biometrische gegevens, zoals vingerafdrukken, opgenomen in het paspoort.  Een nieuw paspoort kan, om die reden, alleen in persoon worden aangevraagd op de Ambassade te Wellington en op de Consulaten in Auckland en Christchurch. Na 1 oktober 2015  kunt voor een paspoort aanvraag alleen nog maar terecht bij de Ambassade in Wellington. De Consulaten kunnen na deze datum deze dienst niet leveren.

Voor diegenen die niet in staat zijn in persoon binnen de termijn van 10 jaar een nieuw paspoort aan te vragen bestaat de mogelijkheid een Verklaring van Nederlandse nationaliteit aan te vragen bij de Ambassade te Wellington. Dit kunt u per post doen. Deze verklaring verlengt voor diegenen met een dubbele nationaliteit de Nederlandse nationaliteit met 10 jaar. De verklaring is echter geen reisdocument.
