Both the New Zealand and Netherlands Governments are appreciative of the contributions made by some very committed members of the Dutch community.
These people listed below have been honoured with public service awards, by either Queen Elizabeth or Queen Beatrix, the New Zealand or in some cases all three. If you know of others who should be listed here please send us an email with the information you have.
On 10 July 2011, in Palmerston North, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Arie van der Wiel, presented Henk den Hartog, on his 80th birthday, with a Royal Honour.
For his lifelong work in the flower industry, his services to promote the flower trade between the Netherlands and New Zealand, and his dedication to the flowers and bulb industry in New Zealand, Mr Den Hartog was made a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau.
President of the Federation of Netherlands Societies, Kees was awarded a Dutch Knighthood in 2012 for his services to the Dutch Community in New Zealand. He has served the Wellington Dutch Club for over 22 years and has been president of the Federation of Societies for over 13 years.
Otto was a larger than life restauranteur who made a terrific contribution to the Hospitality Industry in New Zealand, particularly in Wellington and Auckland, and was awarded a (British) Queen's Service Medal in recognition of his efforts.
As Founder President of the New Zealand Netherlands Foundation Boyd has worked tirelessly for the Dutch community in New Zealand and still continues to do so - even though he is well into his eighties. Primarily responsible for bringing such events as the touring Anne Frank Exhibition and the World Press Photo Exhibition to New Zealand, he fits in these commitments around his busy working life. Boyd has been honoured by both the English and the Dutch Queen for his contributions to New Zealand's varied cultural experience.
Made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of his contribution to the New Zealand Building Industry, Joe was surprised by the recognition. He and his partner founded the Lockwood Homes business when they emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1950s and Lockwood continues to be a thriving business in New Zealand.
